So, you have seen the Millefoglie Italian wedding cake all over social media. It looks like your perfect wedding cake and the ideal dessert to feed your wedding guests. But outside of seeing the gorgeous images and videos online you know nothing about it! Here are some of our most frequently asked questions about the Millefoglie to get you up to speed and falling just a little bit more in love with this delicious Italian wedding cake alternative.

  • The name Millefoglie means ‘A thousand layers’. This refers to the many layers of delicate, flaky puff pastry. On top of the pastry sits a delicious Vanilla Italian pastry cream known as ‘Crema Pasticcera’. The Millefoglie is topped with a layer of Chantilly cream and lots of summer fruits, then dusted with icing sugar for that finishing touch. Traditionally it consists of 3 layers of pastry, but if your preference is to go for scale rather than height you can opt for two.

  • Traditionally the flavour is vanilla, simple and delicious. However, the Millefoglie has evolved over time and with popularity new flavour combinations have been created. We are always happy to hear any requests you might have, but some popular alternative Millefoglie flavour additions include Pistachio, chocolate, Tiramisu inspired or Limoncello.

  • No, a round shape is a traditional shape and creates a real show-stopping centrepiece. However, Millefoglie is often made heart-shaped, rectangular or square too.

  • Millefoglie and Millefeuille are a very similar dessert.

Millefoglie originates from the French mille-feuille but adopted its own identity and tradition within the world of Italian Pasticceria. Whilst they both include the same delicious concept of puff pastry and pastry cream layers, the French Millefeuille is classically finished with icing on top, and presented as an individual plated dessert. It was in Italy that this dessert became a large celebratory centrepiece cake.

  • Due to its delicate nature, size and fresh ingredients, it cannot be transported when its already constructed. This Italian wedding cake is built at the venue by Lorena herself! This can be done in view of the guests if you would like to add a touch of theatre to your day.

A lot of couples get involved with the build of the Millefoglie by placing the final pieces of fruit, or sprinkling icing sugar on top. This makes for a fun photography moment.

  • The Millefoglie ideally needs to be sliced and served within two hours of its creation. This is due to the fresh ingredients used, including fresh cream.

This is a reason why Millefoglie becomes the perfect dessert too. Serve either as the wedding breakfast dessert or to guests in the evening shortly after the set up of the Millefoglie has taken place.

  • We can make the Millefoglie to any size requirement. You let us know the number of wedding guests you have and we can calculate the size of Millefoglie you will need to ensure everyone has a generous portion of this delicious wedding dessert.
